Le Public Interest Registry, which manages the .org domain names, will be sold to the investment company Ethos Capital. What revolts organizations that depend.
A call to save the .org domain names has been launched with a petition to the key. The idea is to prevent the Public Interest Registry, which runs from 2003 .org or sold by the Internet Society to a private company called Ethos Capital.
Behind this call, intitulé « Savedot.org », sont interpelés les dirigeants de l’Internet Society, but also the Public Interest Registry and ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Either the ecosystem that administers domain names. All the .org community headwind. Organizations like Greenpeace, Internet Archive, Electronic Frontier Foundation – who launched his own protest letter- or Creative Commons also support the process and are offended not to have been consulted.
A matter of principle
as Wikipedia, Unesco, Linux Mozilla, they have in common to use a URL .org. This is a top-level domain of the Internet created 1985. He was previously open to all, even if especially interested international organizations, non-profit, OSS or charities. But the situation could change with this shift in the hands of Ethos Capital.
The first consequence could be the increase in the price of domain names. censorship attempts are also feared, with suspensions if content or activities deemed contrary to the law in some countries. But it is finally largely a matter of principle and ethics. Difficult for a non-market organization accepting to depend on a for-profit company.
